Guilin, Yangshuo and Longsheng - 4 days/ 3 nights

cruising li river

This is probably the best itinerary you can choose if you have only limited time to visit China, however, it is essentially a natural experience rather than a cultural experience. Guilin is a scenic town and one of the best-known tourist destinations in China.

There are many scenic places within short traveling distance of Guilin and this itinerary includes the two best known, namely Yangshuo and Longsheng.

Yanshuo is approached by a journey down the Li River through sheer sided karst mountain scenery as depicted in centuries of Chinese paintings. One Li River scene appears on the back of China’s 20 Yuan bank note. Longsheng is famous for its beautiful rice terraces and mountain scenery.

Day 1     Arrive Guilin by air or by overnight sleeper train from Shenzhen/Hong Kong.

(The train presents a very attractive option provided that you secure a two berth sleeper compartment with private washroom/toilet. The Dining Car serves very basic Chinese cuisine. There is no need for an overnight in Guilin if arrival is by train. You can proceed directly to the Li River cruise)

Met on arrival and transfer to your hotel.

 Hotel: Your choice of hotel.

Day Two      Guilin to Yangshuo

After breakfast, transfer to the pier for a leisurely cruise (approximately three hours) down the Li River to Yangshuo. National Geographic magazine includes this cruise in the group of Top 10 Water Wonders of the World. Along the way you will admire beautiful scenery and the incredible, oddly shaped limestone peaks which have been depicted in Chinese paintings for centuries. Lush green foliage and clumps of majestic bamboo line both sides of the River. Fishermen poling bamboo rafts and buffalo grazing on the banks, enhance the scene.

Arrive at Yangshuo, an ancient Sui Dynasty village, set in a fairytale-like landscape immortalized by numerous artists and poets. Yangshuo has become one of the most popular backpacker havens in Asia and is colourful and exciting. There are scores of small shops selling souvenirs and many interesting restaurants and coffee shops.

Transfer to your hotel.

After strolling through the narrow streets of Yangshuo, you will be taken to see a truly amazing show, “Impression Liu Sanjie”. This is a stunningly beautiful performance, choreographed by the famous Chinese film director Zhang Yimo. Set outdoors, the local mountains and the river form the backdrop. 500 performers dressed in their ethnic costumes will entertain you.

Day 3    Yangshuo

(If you have the time, an extra day in Yangshuo is highly recommended.)

After breakfast, depart for Longsheng in the mountainous region northeast of Guilin. This is a very scenic area with spectacular rice terraces and colourful ethnic minorities. Drive along beautiful mountain roads to Longji and visit tribal villages of the Zhuang and Yao minorities. Demonstrations of hair combing, singing and dancing may be available upon request.

From the summit of Longji, wonderful views of the of the rice terraces can be seen. These were first built in the Yuan Dynasty, 800 years ago, and were completed in the Qing Dynasty by the Xhuang people.

The terraced fields wind from the river at 380m to an elevation of 885m. In order to enjoy a closer appreciation of village life and the terraces, there is the option of a hike around Pingan Village.

 Arrive at Longsheng for overnight.

Day 4    Longsheng to Guilin to Hong Kong

(Once again, if you have the time, an extra day in Longsheng is highly recommended.)

The morning is at leisure to enjoy this magnificent setting.

Drive back to Guilin, visiting the beautiful Reed Flute Cave en route. More than 180 million years old, the Cave was named for the verdant reeds growing at its entrance. The 240m water-eroded cave contains spectacular stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations.

Transfer to the airport or to the railway station for your return to Hong Kong.

This suggested itinerary can be tailored to suit your own requirements. It can also include other destinations in China or elsewhere in Asia.
