Commence a scenic hike along a section of the Xiling Gorge, which has not been affected by the Three Gorges Dam.

This region of the Yangtze was notorious in history because of the dangers posed by the rapids and the rocky sections of the river. You will see the only remaining sections of the ancient “plank road” which once followed vast sections of this dangerous river.

In ancient times, all transportation in the Three Gorges region was dependent on sailing the waterway. When there was a flood, when the waves were high and the current was swift, all shipping on the river would come to a standstill and the gorges would be closed to travelers. Not until the construction of the “plank road” of the gorges, could communications be improved.

These cliff paths were built by cutting holes into the cliff face and driving wooden beams into the holes. Planks were then laid on the beams to form a path for people to walk on.

The Yangtze River “trackers”, as they came to be called, toiled along towpaths, hauling large ships and junks through shallow sections of the river. Thousands of workers died cutting these towpaths. Workers had to balance precariously on the side of a sheer cliff face, where one misstep could plunge a person into the swirling current. Up until very recently, trackers worked without a stitch of clothing. As many as three hundred men would strip naked and band together to pull a large ship through the river against the current. They shed their clothes for purely practical reasons. The rough fabric chafed their skin and the wet clothes were a sure source of chills.

This should be considered as a dangerous part of the hike because of the zigzag nature of the path. It is slippery and steep.

Stop for lunch at a local farmer’s house.

After lunch, continue hiking along the Gorge to Nantou Village.

There will be a coach pick-up from Nantou Village and you will transfer to the Three Gorges Dam site.

Day Three    Three Gorges Dam Site/ Phoenix Mountain/ Wushan

Breakfast at the hotel.

During the morning, visit the site of the enormous and notorious Three Gorges Dam Project, the biggest hydropower project in the world.

After inspecting the Dam site, continue by motorcoach to the Chain Cliff, visiting Phoenix Mountain en route. Enjoy lunch at a local farmers house.

Spend the afternoon hiking the fascinating Chain Cliff region. This is an enormous rock cliff with many cracks. One of the largest cracks is up to 5 meters wide, 170 meters long and 105 meters deep. This is an area of enormous geological interest and scenic beauty. In order to preserve the cliff face, the erosion of which could cause serious changes in the course of the river, the government has so far anchored 173 chains in the cliff face.

After the afternoon hike return by coach to the Dam site and join a hydrofoil for the journey up-river to Wushan County.

Day Four    Wushan/ Wu Gorge/ Goddess Peak/ Wushan

The Wu Gorge, 44 kilometres in length, is considered to be the most beautiful of the Yangtze Gorges. There are twelve famous peaks, the most famous of which is Shennu Feng (Goddess) Peak. This peak is topped by a large rock that resembles a sculpture of a girl looking down on the boats in the River.

The day will be spent hiking to the very top with wonderful opportunities for photography.

Return by ferry to Wushan County for overnight.

Day Five     Wushan/ Qutang Gorge/ White Emporer City/ Fengjie

Fengjie is located at the western end of the Yangtze Three Gorges and is situated at the entrance of Qutang Gorge. White Emperor City is named for Gong Sunshu who, in the first century AD declared himself the “White Emperor”. Remains of the city wall can still be seen and the temple built to commemorate his reign dates back 1,950 years. Fine views of the entrance to Qutang Gorge can be seen from the temple. There was a huge rock in the river in front of White Emperor City and it used to be a constant hazard to boats riding the swift current and heading into the narrow entrance of Qutang Gorge. Over the ages, countless vessels perished. In l959 it took a work team seven days to blow up this enormous rock.
